Koornlands Restaurant is located in the historic Overberg town of Swellendam, roughly two hours’ drive from Cape Town. A range of excellent accommodation is available in the town and Swellendam is an excellent base from which to explore world-famous wine estates, our beautiful coastline and the Klein Karoo; all are within an hour’s drive from the town.

Directions:

From the Historic Quarter, the eastern side of town and George, drive down the main road (Voortrek Street), passing the NG Church and Spar. Continue over all the stop streets until you leave the main shopping area. Koornlands is on the main road, on your left-hand side, well-signed. Off-street parking is behind the restaurant.

From the western side of town, Ashton and Cape Town, at the 4-way stop on the R60, turn into Vorktrek and drive roughly 1km. Koornlands is on your right-hand side, on the main road. Off-street parking is well-signed and behind the restaurant.

About Your Chefs

We are Stephen and Marianne Altham, Chefs by nature not nurture.

We possess very well-honed talent which was gained and refined in the restaurants which we have opened and run.

We began in 1995 with the restoration and conversion of the Rheenendal Water Mill into a fully functioning restaurant known as De Molen. This bistro style of operation served us well for almost six years, when we decided to open a full-service establishment: somewhere to show case our talents to a wider Swellendam.

Thus Koornlands Restaurant born with the concept of Cuisine Du Cap; a concept born from our visions of Cape Fusion Cuisine and enabled by the suppliers of excellent quality produce in our region.

Over the next several years we served and delighted thousands of patrons at our restaurant until a terrible night when a fire destroyed the building, a national monument at 5 Voortrek St. To our dismay, the restaurant became homeless.

For a number of months we continued to serve our guests in the conservatory at Schoone Oordt Country House until we we able to re-establish ourselves.

In June 2011, we purchased a historic property at 192 Voortrek St. After three months of major renovations to the building, we we finally able to re-open, this time in our own custom-renovated building.

After 15 years, the new Koornlands Restaurant is open, thanks to our patrons and the support of our community.

Our new venture is our life. It is daunting. It is an adventure. It is undeniably and unceasingly satisfying.

Fifteen years on and fifteen years of excellent service.
